Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Optical Modem OBS  -  2019  -  Hugh R. Sharp
  Project Information
Project Title: MRI Development: Earthquake Monitoring Offshore with On-Demand Retrieval of High-Rate Seismic Data Using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle and High-Speed Optical Telemetry Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: John A. Collins, WHOI Project Institution: WHOI
Project ID: 104684 Version #: 7
Date Submitted: 1/20/2015 7:03:00 PM Created By: John A. Collins
Date Last Modified: 8/23/2018 12:20:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/MGG - 1532035 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: In 2019, we propose to deploy 2 OBS with optical modem in the vicinity of the OOI Pioneer Array. The OBS will be recovered in 2020. During both cruises, we will test data transfer, via an optical modem, between 2 OBS and a REMUS AUV.
Summary of Facility Requirements: For both cruises, we need ship-mounted 12 kHz transducers and a CTD/ rosette. We need sufficient deck space for 2 OBS, a REMUS-600 AUV, and a 20' lab. van. For both cruises we need a crane/A-frame to handle the REMUS AUV and the 2 OBS.
Summary of other requirements and comments: N/A

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: Not a repeating cruise.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
Need at least an intermediate ship with adequate deck space for REMUS AUV and 2 OBS. Ideally, this experiment would piggyback on OOI cruise to Pioneer Array
